I was lucky enough to be able to visit one of the temples found on the island. The one I visited was called Ħaġar Qim. This temples origin dates back to approximately 3600 B.C. These are some of the earliest known buildings still standing in the present day.

I wanted to further understand what the temples on the island meant to the people who lived there so I set out to find someone to interview about. I had a chance to interview a Maltese woman about what the temples had meant to her.

She said that she had visited a few of the temples on the island but she never went to revisit them and that people generally don't. However she did say that she grew up learning about them in school.

One comment that stood out to me was that she believed that their culture wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for all the people that came before, including the ones that created the temples.

Overall, it appears that although most Maltese citizens don't visit the temples, they still have an appreciation for the history behind them and how it has effected their present day culture.
Dr. Simon Mercieca, a historian and sociologist at the University of Malta, outlined some of the ways the legacy of the Knights continues to shape Malta today.

Many of the strongest effects he described are clear even after a short time on the island. Their flag, the white cross on a red background, can be seen on everything from churches to souvenirs. After Maltese and English, the third most-widely spoken language is Italian. Many of the holidays commemorate Catholic saints.

I was surprised to learn that the Maltese people feel a much stronger connection to the man-made environment—the churches, forts, harbors, etc.—than to the natural environment. According to Dr. Mercieca, this too can be attributed to the Knights.

Malta has been occupied by external powers for most of its history. Because of this, the land was often owned by the foreigners, but the city, where many Maltese lived was not. Though the Knights were born in other areas of Europe, they often came to Malta as children. Once here, they made an effort to integrate into the island culture, for example by learning the Maltese language. In turn, the Maltese people adopted parts of their culture including the architecture. Even today, people make a strong effort to preserve buildings from the time of the Knights and emulate their style in new construction projects and works of art.

Overall, I am really glad I was able to gain an academic's perspective on the culture we had the opportunity to experience while in Malta.Nandeeka Nayakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02664024304810283501noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879515946866728174.post-21056252903154402472018-07-05T14:35:00.000-07:002018-07-05T14:35:44.923-07:00ICEX Malta 2018 - A Recap

Being in Malta through ICEX was an absolutely incredible opportunity and experience on several levels. Not only did we finish our time there with great data and progress on our research, we were able to witness and learn from the exquisitely wonderful place and culture that is Malta. Nearly every day, the students in the group would have some sort of discussion along the lines of "Wow, it is still completely unbelievable that this is our actual job." Taking coding breaks from photogrammetry and motion planning to snorkel at coral beaches and making research decisions while bobbing around in a diving boat on the blue waters of the Mediterranean are undoubtedly experiences that very few other people will ever be lucky enough to have -- and those were just on the working days. On the vacation days we ferried between islands, hiked through the stunning countryside, and visited Neolithic temples and Medieval castles. Through it all we built great new friendships with our peers within and across school boundaries and got to spend time with experts in academic fields ranging from our own to others like history and technical diving that make up the actual motivation for our work. The massive amount of learning we did could have only been done in Malta, and nowhere else could we possibly have enjoyed ourselves as much as we did.

Even though our time in Malta has come to an end, our work for ICEX is far from over. Now there are plots to generate, interview blog posts to finally complete, reconstructions to perfect, and papers to write. There are many posts still to come on this blog, but now that the most incredible part of our ICEX journey is over, we wanted to thank Chris, Zoe, and the NSF for making this whole thing possible. Malta is a cross roads and even as I have parroted those words to students when describing our project, this year more then before I feel I am able to see some of the history of the intersections crossing East and West over this strategically located island with deep large harbors.

When we first started coming to Malta, I will admit to being mostly drawn to trying to understand their role in WW2, as trying to understand this global conflict always resonated with my desire to try to understand current world oscillations. And Malta's role was so key and dynamic that this recent history always loomed large in my mind when thinking of Malta and its history. This year, I feel like I have been able to see further back. In part due to some of the great lectures organized by our local contact, Dr. Timmy Gambin and in part due to the inclusion of the brilliant Dr. Ambereen Dadabhoy, whose academic focus on the Mediterranean in the 1600s yet articulate vision of the present has helped some of the further past come more clearly into view as relevant and worth understanding.

In terms of lectures, for example, the excellent and entertaining presentation about Maltese Corsairs by Liam Gauci brought to life the legal pirating conducted in the 1600s by Maltese against the Ottoman Turks. The tit for tat robbery and slave taking between the Maltese and Ottoman Turk corsairs all legal and often in the name of religion was somehow shocking to my modern sense of fairness. And then last night, we heard another great lecture from Dr. Mark Aloisio, Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta, about the Mediterranean and the Crusades. This talk further echoed the long history of complex conflict and resource back and forth between the west and eastern sections of the Mediterranean. Coupled with a personal visit to Malta National War Museum, I felt like I could finally put some pieces into place in terms of the history of Malta and its central position as a cultural crossroads.

It is thinking about this history that I read the news about the US supreme court's decision to uphold the travel ban/restrictions to the US of immigrants from 7 mostly Muslim countries. Without being too political on a trip focused on computer engineering, one of our missions in ICEX is to increase global citizenship, thus it is difficult to not hear this news as a tragic continuation of the East/West historical tensions. Learning about Maltese history has helped me see the blame on both sides of history. I cannot help but hope that like the Maltese language itself and the beautiful bougainvilea flowers against Maltese stone walls, that more fruitful outcomes can rise in the intersections between east and west then the recent US supreme court ruling.
Unfortunately, the sea was too rough and the deployment was deemed too risky. The multi-beam data would have served as the basis for a series of camera runs on the "new" wrecks while the existing side scan sonar data collected during our large survey would have been used for the Schnellboot. The Gavia is a new AUV acquired by Professor Gambin which is rated for deeper work and is able to gather both side scan and multi beam sonar data, allowing it to get both high definition scans of wrecks when operating close to the bottom but also capable of conducting wide surveys from a higher altitude.
Nandeeka and I worked on marking the 2017 data for wrecks that were more compatible with the current neural network. Some of the previous wrecks that were marked were more probable wrecks, and thus didn't serve as good training data. Sam and Russell planned missions for Tuesday that would implement the path finding algorithm developed by the previous years team. Bonita and Mitchell worked on obtaining a camera calibration for the GoPro Hero4 so that it's camera footage could be used with the Hero we brought from Mudd. Finally Cole worked on improving the computer model of the Maori so that he could give recommendations to the path planning teams of what sections of the Maori should be focused on in future missions.
As a group we hiked up to a tradition Maltese restaurant with an absolutely beautiful view of the islands. When we arrived an extremely kind Maltese man offered to show us how to play boċċi. It is apparently a very popular and traditional game in Malta and Gozo so much so you can almost find a club in every city.
After our meal we ventured to the Citadel. Which was the center of Gozo's administrative work as well as its military and religious life. The fortress featured a beautiful Cathedral, courts, the Bishop’s Palace, a prison, multiple museums and an amazing view of the island and ocean.
Unfortunately, I forgot to write down his name, but overall, he had a lot of interesting opinions about food on the islands.

He explained to me how Malta's food had been influenced by several other cultures over the years: French, Italian, and especially English, due to Malta's long period of colonization. However despite such strong influences of other cultures, he said that he felt the Maltese people still very much considered their food to be rather unique and their own. I asked him about what first came to mind when he thought of Maltese food in general, and he said Pastizzi and rabbit were the ones that stuck out in his head. In addition to these foods, he emphasized the prominence of pasta in Maltese cooking, with Maltese pasta (penne with Maltese sausage, cream, and Gozo cheese) being his favorite.

Finally, we talked about the differences between food on Malta and Gozo, and overall, he felt they were very similar, except for the fact that Gozo has a much stronger emphasis on cheese. He explained that this is because Gozo has many more farms that the larger island, so naturally, they have more animals and produce more cheese and dairy products here. He stated that Ġbejniet, fresh Gozo cheese, was definitely an important part of Maltese cuisine but especially so on Gozo.

Overall, I really enjoyed learning about the subtle differences between food on Gozo and Malta, and I am glad I got to learn about Maltese food from a local perspective.
Today the team revisited the HMS Maori once again. As always our goal was to try and get more footage and better footage of the wreck. What made today different were some new approaches to mission planning. First we re-ran prior missions created using Sam and Russel's planning software, but using a new rough bathymetry map which allowed us to plan for the AUV to reach greater depths. This allowed us to get a closer look at the Maori and capture previously unseen angles. Afterwards we tried Mitchell's new prototype planner which attempts to best enable photogrammetry by working out AUV paths by approximating the shape of regions of interest. Additionally we tried mounting one camera right facing in the hopes of capturing better data of the sides of the ship, which have previously been difficult to make out due to poor visibility and the higher depth AUV paths.
Sam and Russel's plans worked excellently, and the added depth allowed us to see portions of the ship in wonderful detail. Likewise, Mitchell's alternative planner also performed very well, and it resulted in several clips that show the Moari from previously un-captured perspectives. It's too early to tell exactly how this will change the final reconstruction, but the results are very encouraging. Unfortunately it seems that none of today's missions went deep enough for the right facing camera to get good footage, however I think with a little tweaking we can capture some great data, and fill in a lot of blanks on the reconstruction.
Most of the work I had done previously on corsairs was from either the English or the Ottoman perspective, so it was quite eye-opening to get a perspective on this activity from Malta because the island and its inhabitants have long been positioned by English writers as being the bulwark of protection against the Ottoman onslaught in the western Mediterranean. The island and the Order of St. John gained particular fame after successfully repulsing the Ottoman attack of 1565, known throughout Europe as “The Great Siege of Malta.”

I emphasize religion here because that’s what often got emphasized in early modern texts, that the conflict in the Mediterranean was rooted in religious antipathy and an extension of the crusades. This framing unfortunately obscures the very many ways in which peoples from different religions, such as Christians, Muslims, and Jews lived, worked, and cooperated with each other in the Mediterranean in the early modern period and beyond. In addition, by focusing on religious conflict as the reason why these activities took place, we also ignore how a career on the high seas could allow men from lower stations in life to rise in rank. Finally, we also deny the region the kind of cosmopolitanism it had vis-a-vis religious toleration and cooperation that it had for many centuries. To be sure there were wars, but most often they were about territory, money, and imperial ambition, with the veneer of religion applied on later for good measure.

The Mediterranean has a long and rich history and it is connected to the history of the world. Columbus sailed west because the route to the Mediterranean were already controlled by the Ottomans and Venetians and because the Portuguese had managed to secure a route around Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. That voyage, introduced Europeans to new land and peoples, and policies that were de rigueur in the Mediterranean, like slavery, took on new forms when they crossed the Atlantic. What I hope will come from my research in Malta this summer is a better understanding of the connections between the Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds in this time period.

Later in the evening, everyone returned to the apartment for a very interesting lecture. As a Historian, Liam Gauci has been studying history from the 1800's. He believes that history is best told through human stories. He presented a lecture on the Corsairs from Malta and the culture and history of it all. Overall, it was a very insightful and entertaining lecture on some of Malta's past.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08641396633430500104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879515946866728174.post-89002499098443762332018-06-20T14:54:00.002-07:002018-06-20T14:54:52.440-07:00June 20th Today after doing 10 legs of sonar scanning we completed our final day of surveying. MVP goes out to Makoto and Russell for making it on every boat deployment and helping to get great sonar data for the team.
The morning of the 13th since the marine forecast predicted a dangerously large swell greater than 2 meters in the afternoon, we deployed at 05:00. We were able to complete three runs of 3 legs each, for a total of 9 legs. This covered an area of 1400 x 320 meters. The team was tired but pretty soon the sunrise distracted us from our lack of sleep and we were able to witness a glorious sunrise over the Mediterranean.

These pictures were possible due to a thick haze that obscured the horizon and made the sun a dim disc that was easy to look at for about 10 minutes. At the end of our second run the swell started to pick up, eventually reaching 1.5 to 2 meters at the worst. This made extracting the Iver much harder, but it was completed without too much difficulty.

Professor Clark will be flying back to California in a few days and from then Professor Wood will oversee most of our deployments and data analysis.

Today the team explored Mdina, an important cultural site in Malta. The site of ruins from Phoenician times to Medieval times, it is one of the greatest examples of the depth of Malta's history and how many different great civilizations have rubbed shoulders on this small island in the middle of the Mediterranean. The city was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C. and has since been occupied by the Romans, Arabs and the Order of St. John, a medieval order of knights, serving as the fortified capital of the island until the capital was eventually moved by the order in 1530. It has since declined in usage, but has remained as an impressive fortification visible from much of the island, due to its elevated location.

The first location visited by the team were the catacombs. These seem to have been used from Roman times until Medieval times, with both Christian, Roman, and Jewish people being entombed in their depths. These catacombs have served many purposes differing from their original purpose across the years, from oratories and chapels for Christians to air raid shelters during WWII.
After the exploring the catacombs, the team stopped for a quick lunch and then explored the walls of the castle along with the moat. Since the castle is elevated and has high walls, the views are absolutely spectacular

The weather was particularly beautiful as well, with a fairly strong wind that allowed for far greater visibility than usual. Malta is often quite humid, and that creates a strong haze that brings the visibility down to a several kilometers. The team had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the sites
In the morning, we took the bus to Ħaġar Qim, a complex of neolithic temples that are some of the oldest, free-standing, stone structures in the world. We first watched a 4D movie, complete with strobing lights and water droplets, about the history of the place and walked through a small museum.
The waves were much larger than the past few days; however, we were still able to get lots of good data. The missions ran smoothly again, giving us plenty of sonar files to look at. After an early deployment this morning, the team came back to analyze the sonar data from the last few days spent surveying. Everyone found the data analysis and software extremely interesting.

Later in the afternoon, Dr. Gambin came over to our apartment to review the sonar data using SonarWiz. He taught us how to look over the data carefully and distinguish what features make a target a likely wreck.
Due to wind and wave conditions, we don't think we will be able to deploy tomorrow or Friday, but we are hopeful that we are going to get more missions in over the weekend and next week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13934566564721417708noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879515946866728174.post-42677236243170202302018-06-13T01:10:00.000-07:002018-06-13T01:10:06.283-07:00Morning GloryThis morning we departed at 5:00am for a sunrise deployment, hoping to find some more wrecks with the AUV.
Makoto took charge of planning the day's lawnmower missions in VectorMap and resolved the settings issues that cut short several of the dive paths planned for yesterday. As such, the planned missions went very smoothly and the large majority of the day on the boat was spent either waiting around for the robot to surface, verifying that the robot looked OK when it surfaced, and checking the robot battery life in between missions to make sure that it would be safe to run the next mission. The missions for today also included one that filled in the sections of seafloor we missed yesterday because of mission errors, so we are slowly making our way across the survey rectangle given by Dr. Gambin and filling in the unknown regions of the map.
It was a beautiful day at sea, with low wind, sunny skies, and a nice sunset. Although waiting for the robot was sometimes boring, we're actually thankful that there was little to do because it was a sign that the robot was running smoothly and collecting good data consistently. We have a very early departure time tomorrow morning (5AM) to get as many survey missions in as possible before the wind picks up tomorrow midday, and hopefully our early morning deployments are as uneventful as the deployments were today. The more uneventful missions we have, the more quality data we will have to work with in the days to come when we have to stay on land.

Yesterday the team
conducted our first offshore survey of this years project. We left
the apartment at around 3:00pm yesterday with IVER in tow, and walked
the short distance to the docs to the dock. Here we met up with Dr.
Gambin, two of his graduate students John and Cece, and captain Kevin
. Shortly afterwards we set off, exiting out of Marsamxett Harbour
and heading northeast.

Weather was ideal,
granting us good visibility and low winds. First release of the IVER
went smoothly and was aided by the convenient inclusion of a diving elevator
on the boat. However, just a few minutes after release an error
message was broadcast from the IVER and it began resurfacing.
Following the IVER’s reported coordinates we spent a good ten to
fifteen minutes searching with no success. The situation was becoming
worrisome, but just then Mitchell managed to spot the robot off in
the distance. Afterwards the team determined that the error
message and mission abort were the result of a maximum depth
threshold that had not been reset for these deeper surveys.
Additionally, a reset of the boats GPS system corrected a discrepancy
between the IVER’s GPS which had lead us to the wrong locations while searching.

A second launch
started clean with the first leg of the survey being completed.
Unfortunately upon resurfacing we noticed the IVER having difficulty
diving back down. This issue was resolved shortly afterwards and was,
in short, the result of the IVER’s DVL altimeter being unable to
detect the sea-floor once the robot was angled downwards for a dive.
The IVER was reconfigured to continue diving regardless of altimeter
reading up until it reaches 50m bellow the surface, resolving the
prior issue.

The third launch
went off without a hitch, and we were able to get a full 3-legged
mission completed prior to sunset. Afterwards we headed back into the
harbor, unloaded our gear, and met back at the apartment for dinner
and analysis of the collected data. During initial overview of the
collected sonar data Dr. Gambin was able to identify several
potential points of interest, as well as point out debris from a
known dumping sight nearby. We’re all eager to find investigate
these location further, and to continue surveying the area for new
archaeological sites over the next couple of weeks.

We also welcomed Dr.
Ambereen Dadabhoy to Malta when she arrived yesterday evening. She
will be joining us on surveys, and conducting her own humanities
focused research during her stay in the country.

Sam and Russell had built an information map of the Maori wreck using the sonar images from Wednesday, and used it to plan missions to get camera and sonar data for the CalPoly team. Mitchell and Nandeeka also planned some new lawnmower missions to get clean sonar data of the entire wreck. Makoto, in an effort to find bolts to properly attach the camera lights to the robot, stayed behind to wait for a DIY store to open to get the necessary hardware.

Unfortunately, when we reached St Elmo's Bay, the winds were upwards of 35 km/hr, too strong for a deployment. However, looking ahead, we noted that the winds were going to die down by Sunday. So, we switched our schedule around and decided to explore Valletta on Friday and do the deployment on Sunday.

Since we no longer had an ecab to transport all seven of us and the IVER, Prof Clark and the robot went back to drop off the robot while we walked to a cafe and hung out while waiting for him and Makoto.
Professor Gambin came in the morning to train everyone on using the Sonar Wiz software. This allows us to create geo-referenced images of the side scan sonar runs and also larger images with many different sonar runs overlaid on one another. This allows us to create much more accurate estimations of the positions of wrecks in data and much more information in general for identifying shipwrecks and planning paths. For example, with the overlay of different sonar scan paths, a scan of a wreck can be made with much less shadow which is much more crisp and has more detail. This could help us in identifying wrecks. For path planning, the sonar can be used to find the height off bottom of various wrecks, which is a useful term in identifying areas of high information gain.
In the afternoon we also had a lecture from Professor Keith, who discussed water treatment in Malta, and the unique challenges faced by an island with a fairly arid climate and a booming population. Most of the research that he has conducted has focused on wells and cisterns. Wells are able to retrieve water from deep aquifers while cisterns hold rainwater that has collected after storms. Professor Keith's lecture also covered the various types of rocks that are found on the island, their various permeabilities and the effects that they have on the formation of various freshwater sources on the island. Finally, Professor Keith also mentioned the effects that such buildups of fresh water affected the population growth and centers on the island, with Medieval Maltese people congregating around large sources of water. These sources are now at a critically low point, with the Maltese government compensating for them with a variety of water purification processes.

At the end of the day we also walked along the coastline of Sliema and explored a bit, getting some nice pictures and trying to scope out some good restaurants as well as swimming spots. (one was discovered on the southwestern part of Sliema's point). Below are some pictures of Sliema's waterfront along with some pictures of the abundant cranes
